Robert Boswell’s The Half-Known World is a phenomenal collection of craft essays that any serious writer cannot do without. I was lucky enough to take part in the section of a Form & Technique class that he taught where each of us had to write an entire novel during the course of the semester (one chapter per week). He devised detailed exercises for each week so that each student’s novels would follow roughly the same plot points. Let me just say that this class was an intense learning experience and he deserves a lot of credit for the amount of soul he puts into his teaching. This was a typical Robert Boswell class — the section was filled well beyond capacity with admirers who did their best to keep up as he worked his ass off giving us all a quality education.
