Ideas You Can Get While Showering

There are three places where I always get ideas.

Good place #1: The Shower. Always. It’s like a portable brilliant box, a place you can go into and by the time you come out you’ve got a head full of fresh ideas and a clean body. Actually, I should invent some sort of device that would allow people to capture the good ideas they get in the shower because (as is the case with any free-association) unless you record it immediately and go deeper with it, the idea pretty much just drifts away, away, away.

Good place #2: Road Trips. This one isn’t surprising. Spend several hours with a given destination in mind and not much to do until then to occupy your time, your brain will come up with some good ideas.

Good place #3: Book Stores. Surrounded by all those ideas, all those authors and filled with my own furious desire to possess all the promises kept within all those zillion pages, I will inevitably come up with a few ideas. Usually they’re inspired by seeing good book titles and getting kindred-spirit feelings from knowing there are lots of people out there doing very similar things. Bookstores establish a kind of psychic community for writers.
